Hi Friends!
Thanksgiving is less than one week away! However you wouldn’t know it by walking into CVS.
Seriously, half of the store is decked out in candy canes, flashing lights, plastic ornaments, singing Santas and tacky accessories…
mistletoe headband: my very favorite tacky Christmas accessory
But you know what? I love it. I love everything about the holiday season–the songs, the lights, the classy sweaters…
and of course, the food.
But before I start talking about the amazingness that is Christmas cookies (and we WILL talk about it. Brace yourselves friends, because I adore peanut butter blossoms and sugar cutouts with pretty icing), let’s discuss turkey day.
Actually scratch that. I really dislike it when people call Thanksgiving “turkey day.” It makes me anxious that I’ll feel like a waddling bird afterwards. ;-p
Better alternative names for Thanksgiving might include:
I Love Side Dishes Day
or
Pie is Delicious Day
or
I’ll Be Lucky if I Survive the Family Drama Day :-p
Don’t get me wrong, I like turkey, but I don’t think it’s what makes the meal memorable.
Apparently the Huffington Post agrees. So much so, that they’re holding a Thanksgiving Side Dish Smackdown! That’s right–they’re giving credit where credit’s due, and they plan on crowning THE BEST Thanksgiving side dish this Saturday.
But first they want YOUR vote! Round one is already over, but you have until 10am tomorrow (Friday) to weigh in (no pun intended) on whether you think stuffing trumps sweet potato casserole with marshmallows (no way!) or if mashed potatoes are truly superior to Brussels sprouts (love ’em both!).
p.s. this is my favorite roasted Brussels sprouts recipe! Ina never lets me down.
ROUND ONE: Here are the Sweet 16 official results, with the winners in bold:
Stuffing 97%, Carrot Salad 3%
Mashed Potatoes 96%, Applesauce 4%
Green Bean Casserole 49%, Dinner Rolls 51%
Fresh Cranberry Sauce 69%, Roasted Squash 31%
Sweet Potato Casserole with Marshmallow 66%, Rice Pilaf 34%
Cornbread 73%, Corn Pudding 27%
Brussels Sprouts 55%, Canned Cranberry Jelly 45%
Candied Yams 51%, Roasted Carrots 49%
Now, hurry, go vote for the winners!
Then, tell me how you voted! (Or, if you’re reading this after voting closed, how you would have voted).
Stuffing or Sweet Potato Casserole with Marshmallows?
Corn Bread or Dinner Rolls?
Mashed Potatoes or Brussels Sprouts?
(Fresh) Cranberry Sauce or Candied Yams?
AND/OR…
What’s your favorite tacky Christmas item?
